After a short night against the rising Jon Jones last Sunday at "UFC on Versus 1" Brandon "The Truth" Vera finds himself with back-to-back losses. Any fighter in his situation would be looking inside themselves to try and figure out their next move.
For Brandon Vera his next move has already been decided; rest and recovery are going to be his future for a substantial amount of time.
Sources tell us that the elbow from Jones that ended the bout in the very first round also shattered Vera's cheekbone. Vera's management has stated that he will have to undergo surgery to repair the injury, which may keep him out of sparring for as long as six months.
Knowing these facts, what is in store for Brandon Vera's MMA future? Vera has been about as hot and could as a fighter can be. He holds victories over contenders like Frank Mir but has also suffered losses to mid-tier fighters like Keith Jardine.
At this point the time has come and gone for Vera will ever fulfill his "potential" and be the next big thing or even a title contender. However he is a fighter with a good skill set and if given right match ups he can be a part of some good fights in the UFC. It would be interesting to see Vera in the cage with a number of fighters including Rich Franklin, Lil Nog, Matt Hamil, or even a rematch with Keith Jardine.
There was a time when a young, brash, up and coming Brandon Vera called out a then dominant Chuck Liddell. Now that Chuck is returning to MMA maybe Vera will get his shot at The Iceman, even if it won't be for UFC gold.
Brandon Vera is a fighter who many people (especially himself) had labeled as the future of the UFC. While Brandon may not have lived up to the hype he can still be competitive with many of the fighters in the UFC's light heavyweight division. Heres to hoping "The Truth" heals quickly and returns to the octagon soon.
