The Spider carries a perfect 10-0 octagon record with him to his middleweight title defense this Saturday at UFC 112. He also has a 25-4 record overall, with 15 of his fights coming by way of KO/TKO. Silva has not lost an MMA fight in nearly five years, and many, including UFC President Dana White, rank him as the top pound for pound fighter in the world.
So who in the middleweight division could pose any type of challenge to Anderson Silva's crown?
The answer is a man who has just as many credentials, but a very different style.
Demian Maia is a two-time Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championship Finalist, a mutiple CBJJ placewinner, and the most accomplished submission artist in MMA today. His MMA record is 12-1 with eight of his wins by submission.
Half of Anderson Silva's losses came by way of tap out due to a submission hold.
Demian Maia and Anderson Silva truly have yin and yang like styles. Come Saturday night expect to see Maia do all he can to get the fight to the ground and employ his slick jiu-jitsu skills while Silva tries equally hard to stay upright and unleash his precision striking. The winner will almost certainly be the one who stays in his world and keeps his opponent out of their's.
If Anderson is to become the greatest MMA and truly rule the pound-for-pound list he will have to find a way to defeat any obstacle in his path. And that includes ADCC Champions. The ability to adapt, overcome, and find the way to victory is the mark of a great champion. Silva has done this many times before. Saturday night if the fight hits the canvas we will see if The Spider has some more magic in store.
